Vacation Bible School -- 2004

It's the big event of June! Northtown Vacation Bible School attracts over 200 people each night -- about half of them adults. It combines drama, singing, refreshments, play and sound Christian teaching for children aged 2 through the 6th grade.

An account of the 2003 VBS is also available here.

There is a standard formula, but a new theme every year (2004 featured a Mexican theme) and a host of variations and innovations. There is always "the Professor" and his time machine, a device for moving modern characters back in history and historical characters into the present. The Devil always pays a visit each night to tempt the children, but he is driven off with a Bible verse. A puppet show provides a moral lesson for the kids. In 2004 new characters included the Evangelator and Gospel Girl -- super heros who don't have super powers, but who serve a God that does.

Time to go inside for the beginning of VBS.
Don Roberto and Doņa Penny preside over the proceedings.
Yes, minister Keith Brumley has inherited the green wig, and is the Professor whose time machine keeps malfunctioning.
There is Mexican dancing and of course the puppet show.
Break time comes, and the kids have refreshments.
Younger children break a piņada . . .
. . . and gather around to get candy.
Older kids chat with friends . . .
. . . or play dodgeball, and then everyone goes back inside for a Biblical drama (below).
